About Peterbilt Trucks
Peterbilt trucks owe their origins to the lumber industry. In 1939, T. A Peterman, a Washington lumberman, acquired Faogel Truck and Motor Company, located in Oakland, CA, and began building chain drive and shaft drive vehicles largely targeted towards the lumber industry, though the very first Peterbilt was a fire truck chassis built for the Fremont (then Centerville) fire department. Peterbilt was acquired by PACCAR in 1958 and continues to operate alongside Kenworth, one of its primary competitors.
Here’s a closer look at Peterbilt:
Manufacturing
Peterbilt headquarters are in Denton, TX and their trucks are manufactured in Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, Canada, and Mexicali, Mexico. PACCAR engines are made in Columbus, MS.
Power
Today’s Peterbilts are equipped with PACCAR engines, but you can find older models that have CAT engines. The average Peterbilt has about 500 horsepower. The large MX-13 12.9-liter PACCAR engine provides about 1,850 lb-ft of torque, which allows these trucks to comfortably haul 100,000+ lbs of cargo for long distances. But the thing that makes these engines stand out is that they are lightweight, about 20% lighter than average, meaning the engine doesn’t need to work as hard to drive itself around.
Fuel Consumption and Efficiency
The most powerful Peterbilt engine, the MX-13, can get 9 miles to the gallon. If you’re in the trucking world, you know that’s pretty darn good. The Peterbilt 579, one of the largest Peterbilt trucks, is able to achieve that through engine design, body shape, and advanced technologies that each do their part to help this model achieve industry-leading fuel efficiency.
Comfort, Safety, and Style
Peterbilts are designed to keep drivers safe and comfortable for the long haul. Spacious cabins, ergonomic seats, and quiet cabs prevent driver fatigue. And safety features such as lane assist, collision mitigation, enhanced lighting, and air-powered brakes are just a few of the features that make Peterbilts safe and easy to drive.
