Important Considerations for California Semi-Truck Drivers

If you’re new to driving a commercial vehicle in California, there are some unique regulations you should keep in mind:

• Strict regulations for emissions – California has some of the strictest emissions standards in the nation, so make sure that your truck meets specific engine and filter requirements before driving here.

  Please note that older diesel engines are being phased out, and non-compliance can result in fines and denial of entry at ports and distribution centers.

• Anti-idling laws – In addition to emissions, California also strictly regulates idling. Most trucks cannot idle for more than 5 minutes; in school zones and certain urban areas, idling is entirely prohibited. So, remember to cut the engine!

• Weight and length restrictions – California enforces shorter length limits, specifically 40 feet from the kingpin to the rear axle, which can restrict longer trailers that are allowed in other states.

• Agricultural inspection stations – Trucks entering the state are required to stop at agricultural inspection stations to check for pests, plants, and produce.
